When Should You Choose a Tablecloth with a Satin Band?
A tablecloth with a satin band combines a plain white table surface with a subtly lustrous border. In our Padua collection, a woven satin stripe runs around all four sides of the tablecloth, while the centre remains free from woven patterns.
Compared with a plain white tablecloth, Padua adds a discreet decorative detail along the edges. Unlike a patterned damask tablecloth , it creates a calmer overall appearance, as the decorative weave is concentrated along the border.
Padua is therefore a good choice if you prefer coordinated white table linen with a subtle decorative accent. Whether for restaurants or private dining, the deciding factor is the appearance you want for your table setting.
What Is a Satin Band on a Tablecloth?
A satin band is a subtly lustrous stripe woven directly into the tablecloth fabric. It is not sewn on or printed afterwards. Its distinctive appearance is created by a satin weave.
In this type of weave, the yarns form longer floats on the fabric surface, reflecting light differently from the surrounding material. On a white tablecloth, the satin band remains white as well – its subtle sheen, rather than a different colour, creates the visual contrast.
Good to know: Depending on the lighting and viewing angle, the satin stripe may appear clearly defined or almost blend into the surrounding fabric. This is why the border can look more or less pronounced in product photographs.

What Does an All-Round Satin Band Mean?
An all-round satin band means that the woven satin stripe runs along all four sides of the tablecloth, not just the two long edges.
This creates a subtle, continuous border around the tablecloth. It is particularly attractive on freestanding dining tables and banquet tables, where the edges can be seen from every side.
Good to know: Not every tablecloth with satin stripes has a border on all four sides. Our Padua tablecloths feature a continuous satin band around the edges.
Hemmed Edge or Selvedge?
Selvedge: This is the finished edge formed during weaving. It does not need to be folded and sewn separately.
Hemmed edge: The cut fabric edge is folded over and neatly stitched to create a durable finish.
On Padua tablecloths: Two sides have woven selvedges and two sides are hemmed. The satin stripe nevertheless forms a continuous decorative border on all four sides.
What Size Satin Band Tablecloth Do I Need?
Our Padua tablecloths are available in a range of classic table linen sizes suitable for restaurant and home dining tables. Besides your table measurements, the desired tablecloth drop is the most important factor when choosing the right size.
Example: For a table measuring 80 × 170 cm, a 130 × 220 cm tablecloth provides approximately 25 cm of drop on each side. This allows the continuous satin band to remain visible below the table edge.
Important for cotton tablecloths: The expected washing shrinkage is already taken into account when our Padua tablecloths are made. The stated dimensions refer to the intended size after washing. There is no need to add an extra shrinkage allowance when ordering.
Padua on Common Table Sizes
- Table 80 × 120 cm → Tablecloth 130 × 170 cm: approx. 25 cm drop on each side
- Table 80 × 140 cm → Tablecloth 130 × 190 cm: approx. 25 cm drop on each side
- Table 80 × 170 cm → Tablecloth 130 × 220 cm: approx. 25 cm drop on each side
- Table 80 × 200 cm → Tablecloth 130 × 250 cm: approx. 25 cm drop on each side
Questions About Satin Band Tablecloths
Centre the tablecloth on your table and check the drop on all four sides. This helps the continuous satin band create an even decorative border. On rectangular tables, you can check the drop along the sides and ends separately.
Plain white cloth napkins complement a white Padua tablecloth particularly well. Napkins with a subtle woven pattern are another option. Choosing plain napkins allows the satin band to remain the main decorative detail.
Our white Padua cotton tablecloths are washable at temperatures up to 95°C according to their product specifications. Always follow the care label and treat stains promptly. Proper care is particularly important when table linen is used frequently.
